Delegates and Alternates

Delegate nomination

Urgent: action required by 15 July 2022

New delegates (if a parish’s existing delegate is unable to attend the 2023 in-person sessions) need to be registered using these two forms.

  • Parish Details form: LCA General Synod delegate (Word  PDF)
  • LAMP2 form (Word  PDF)

If your parish is unable to appoint a new delegate, you may appoint an alternate. For more information about appointing an alternate, visit the FAQ page.

Delegates, are you willing and able to attend the in-person sessions?

Your parish elected you as its delegate for the 20th synodical period. This three-year term includes both the General Synod online sessions (held in October 2021) and the in-person sessions to be held in February 2023. If you are willing and able to attend the in-person sessions in Melbourne, there is no need for your parish to do any more.

Appointing an alternate

If however you are not able or willing to attend the in-person sessions, your parish will need to appoint an alternate. Note that an alternate may only be appointed if we already hold your delegate details in LAMP2. In other words, your parish must elect a delegate (even if they are not cannot attend the in-person sessions) before it may appoint an alternate.

Please also note that a lay person (not a pastor) must be elected as an alternate for a lay delegate.

An alternate is appointed to attend the Convention sessions only, in the event that the elected delegate is not able or willing; that is, they do not replace the elected delegate for the three-year synodical term. The delegate and the alternate may not both attend the Convention sessions.

If no-one from your parish is willing or able to attend the in-person sessions as an alternate, you may need to register an apology, which can be done in our Convention online event management system, which will open in November.

We suggest that you set a target of 30 June to confirm your parish’s representation at the in-person sessions. This will be either (a) you, or (b) an alternate if you are unable or unwilling to attend.

Next …

If your parish needs to appoint an alternate, you need to register these details in LAMP2 by 15 July. Delegates and alternates will need to read important documents in the months leading up to General Synod. Your parish delegate or alternate must be registered in LAMP2 in order to receive these documents and other Synod-related information. To be clear: if you are the elected delegate and are able and willing to attend the in-person sessions, you are already in the LAMP2 and you do not need to re-register. Registration in LAMP2 applies only to alternates and new delegates.

Registrations for General Synod itself will open in November, and you will be advised about this via Synod eNews.
